BIOMASS BOILERS
Biomass energy is a common method of converting organic matter into energy. Burning wood releases chemical energy in the form of heat which can be used to heat buildings. Biomass systems use pellets, chips or logs to power central heating and hot water boilers.

BIOMASS BOILER TYPES

Chips are normally employed to gain heat in buildings with a larger area, or several different buildings.

Pellets have the advantage of being able to run automatically (similar to conventional boilers). Both pellet and chip systems are equipped with an automatic device that feeds pellets/chips regularly.

Log Systems do not possess automatic feeders, and require substantial amount of logs for heating a building. They tend to be more economical than pellets though.
Benefits
A wood-fuelled biomass boiler could save you substantial amounts of money in comparison to electric heating. It’s not only an affordable alternative heating fuel, but you could also apply to Financial Support on the Renewable Heat Incentive, and it is considered a low-carbon option (savings at around 15 Tonnes carbon dioxide a year).
Things to consider
Some things to consider when installing biomass systems is the space for the boiler (that are normally larger than conventional ones) and to store the wood(chips/pellets/logs). You may also need to check whether you need planning permission.
Maintenance
Weekly regular cleaning of boilers (removing ashes) is pretty much the only maintenance necessary. Some devices have automatic cleaning mechanisms. Apart from that they will require annual maintenance. It’s also important to remember that logs need to be air-dried for about a year before being used.
