SOLAR THERMAL

Solar water heating systems also called “solar thermal “systems gives you hot water by using heat from the sun. Using collectors (solar panels) mounted on the roof, they will use solar energy (heat) to increase the temperature of water. This water is then stored in cylinder.

Benefits

Benefits are numerous. Amongst them, you can have hot water throughout the year. During winter time a complementary boiler or immersion heater may be needed to heat the water further or when solar energy is not available. But in the summer you can get most of your hot water needs with this system You will have a reduction in your hot water costs and lower carbon emissions.

Check the UK Government’s Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI) for potential payments/grants.

Things to consider

You will need a sunny place to install the collectors. Normally 5 square meters of roof space, on an area that gets sunlight through the day.  The collectors can be installed on a wall as well.

You will also need to check if you have space for a bigger or an extra hot water cylinder. You may need to check the compatibility of your current boiler with a solar water heating.

Maintenance

The maintenance requirements for this system is normally very low. Ideally a check should be done every 3 to 7 years. Also the pump should be checked regularly, to verify if it is working properly.
